Sept. 19/05- Blackberries, Headaches, and Detox... Well, I am sure most of you already know what has been happening the past month...if you don't here it is: in short, I was in a horrible crash during a criterium in Charlotte, NC on Aug. 6 leaving me with a fractured skull, concussion, stitches to the face, broken thumb requiring surgery, a subluxed shoulder and a few scrapes. But...my bike was ok :-) Since then I have been recovering after surgery and slowly getting back into training. I was completely off the bike and off all exercise for 2 weeks. The third week I was able to start by 20min on the trainer with a heart rate no more than 120bpm. I was under the care of a sports dr. who was keeping tabs on my head injury. After each training session I was to monitor my headaches, dizzyness and fatigue. I was lucky to be able to exercise at 2 weeks. Let me tell you, I couldn't wait as my body was stiffening up and I was feeling worse as the days past. My whiplash and shoulder injury were probably the most uncomfortable, leaving me unable to do a sit up or roll over in bed very well. My hand was in a removable cast, and the pain was ok. My friend told me my hand looked like "Fat Bastard" from the movie The Spy who Shagged Me. It has now been 5.5 weeks and I am happy to be back in a training program, back riding on the road outside and feeling better all the time. The headaches are getting less severe and, actually at the moment I have gone 4 days without one!!! To help rid of all the toxins I am sure my body gathered up through the surgery and pain killers that I was taking, I am doing a 12 day detoxification cleanse. In fact, I do this cleanse every year anyways, but this year I couldn't wait. It is called the Wild Rose Detox. It is not very complicated. Basically for 12 days you aren't allowed to eat any sugar, flour, bread, dairy, vinegar or any fermented anything. Limited fruits as well. No sweet tropical fruits like bananas, oranges, pineapple. No grapes, mushrooms as they have yeast on the outsides. Sounds pretty easy, but it is amazing how when you read labels of absolutely everything you put in your mouth alot of it has these ingredients. ESPECIALLY sugar of some form. There is a bit more to it, but that is the basis of the cleanse. Here is a typical day for me eating: Morning Lemon Water Hommade Soup of some sort Salad with sesame oil, hot pepper, ginger
and garlic dressing On the bike I bring water bottles with 3/4water 1/4 apple juice, a piece of fruit, roasted almonds for energy. At this time of year in Victoria, B.C (my hometown) the blackberry bushes are in full fruit everywhere. So my rides typically involve one or more stops when I see a juicy berry bush. The lemon juice is great to start your digestive juices, and to help with the cleanse. I also practice Yoga a few times a week, and have a cleansing bath with Epsom salts and a scrub. A good book to read is "Eating Alive" Prevention thru good digestion by Dr. Jonn Matsen I encourage everyone to visit the www.rsquare.com website, as it has all the information on the amazing delicious flax seed/soy protein cereal. So, that is it! It is nice to sleep in the same bed for 2 weeks now. Having said that, I am sure missing the racing that I would be doing in Europe. I missed all the world cups and the tour of Holland. But I am looking ahead, and moving forward to the track season coming up. We have a training camp at the beginning of October to qualify for the upcoming world cups this winter. Stay tuned! gina
