. Sea Otter Classic, where to start? Sea Otter classic is the largest
multi day, multi event race in North America. It hosts BMX, Mountain
Bike XC, Downhill MTB and 2 Road events plus a slue of recreational
rides. Saturday’s SRAM NRC Circuit race was the event that Teamexpresscopy.com
was there for.
As we pulled in to the Laguna Seca Speedway we had left the early morning
rain behind us, the sky remained cloudy but the track was dry. This
was the first race with Gina after just finishing the World Championships
for her track season. The riders received there new race bikes, yes
NEW, these bikes will stay with the new race truck that Jeff and Dave
outfitted this past week in Portland. The 6x10 trailer was just too
small, so we rolled into to Sea Otter with a 16’ box truck and
room to move around.
Just as the race started the sky start to spit a bit of rain but it
didn’t seem to be anything to worry about. On the second lap of
the race Anne and an Aarons’ rider stretched their legs and had
a 10sec gap as the came across the start finish line. The next lap around
it was a Webcor and an Aarons’ rider that had just a slight advantage.
By the fourth lap it was all together and stayed that way until about
6 laps in and the sky opened up. On lap 8, Meshy got the race going
again coming into the feed zone, just after the start/finish, but the
peleton was not willing to let her go. By lap 9, the sky really opened
up, sending people looking for cover anywhere they could find. On lap
10, Mara Abbott of Webcor launched an attack, which didn’t amount
to much thanks to the pounding rain that was washing mud and rocks onto
the course. At this point, the weather proved to be too much, and the
race was temporarily postponed. The riders were told to stay warm and
be ready to resume racing. With the cold and windy weather and the pouring
rain, it was impossible to stay warm. After hearing the opinions of
a few team directors, officials decided to invoke the “Act of
God” rule, and cancel the race. However, because the race was
cancelled just half way into things, we were told that there was not
an official finish, and there would not be any prize money awarded!
This may just be the most expensive race of the year! Look for us next
in New Mexico at the Tour of the Gila starting on May 2nd.
