Jan 19-21, 2006- World Cup #3, Los Angeles, California-

This past weekend at the Home Depot center velodrome in Carson, California, Grain displayed her best performance yet at a world cup points race event. Tied for 5th place and only 3points away from standing on the podium, Gina qualified herself and the country for the 2006 World Championships.

The 80 lap points race began on the 250m velodrome as a cautious watching game up until the first sprint at 10 laps into the race. Grain went aggressively into this first sprint placing 2nd, gaining herself 3points. From here on in, the remainder of the 70 laps were aggressive and high paced. Grain showed her technical savy and peak speed and power by being involved in 6 of the 8 sprints. Between these sprints, she was also in 2 breaks, one of which was the break that ended up to be the most dangerous group to be up the' road'. Team USA who had 2 riders who were NOT in the break, brought it back and the group was together once again.
For Grain, who has been intensively training on the Burnaby Velodrome in Vancouver, she walked away from this race happy about her performance. She sais that "specific preparation and focus on this event were key to this performance. It is physically and mentally impossible to be on tip top form for every world cup in the season. When you focus on a specific event, and put everything into proper preparation, this gives you the opportunity to perform to the best of your ability. And, this is what I did. That is why I am happy about this result.

For Gina, she now goes home to Vancouver where she will next ferry over to victoria to attend Canada's Olympic Pool Camp. After this she will head to Arizona for the month of February for her road team camp (www.teamexpresscopy.com). The focus of the next phase is to put in a good road block of training long, lower intensity rides, without the stress of high intensity training and competition expectations. She will then return home at the end of February to begin preparing for the 2006 Track World Championships in Mallora, Spain at the end of March.
