Budget falls short of summer athletes’ expectations
March 21, 2007, OTTAWA - AthletesCAN, the association of Canada’s
national team athletes, and Canada’s summer athletes, are discouraged
by the federal government’s lackluster budget announcement on
Monday.
Great gains have been made in winter sport in recent years to ensure
athletes top the podium when the spotlight is on Canada in 2010 and
the expectation was that this budget would provide a similar commitment
to summer sport through the Road to Excellence Program.
“Summer sport was counting on this budget to provide funding for
the Road to Excellence program, but instead a huge gap remains in the
support of summer athletes,” says AthletesCAN President Claire
Carver-Dias. “It is clear Canadians want to see all of our athletes
succeed, but if the Government doesn’t step up to the plate and
provide the resources athletes need to excel, there won’t be much
to celebrate after 2010.”
